OUT LOUD is a one-hour documentary about the creation of the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles — the largest group of transgender and gender non-conforming people anywhere in the world who regularly sing together. The chorus was co-founded by a trans woman, Lindsey Deaton, who also served as artistic director for the inaugural season. “I feel my mission is to help these choristers to discover and love and use their voices,” says Lindsey. Classically trained, she has her work cut out for her. Many of her choristers have no musical experience, and some are coping with changes to their vocal range as they take hormones for their transition. The stakes are high for all as they count down the weeks to their public concert debut at UCLA. But it’s not just about the music; it’s about the mission. “We’re here to sing,” says Lindsey, “so that we can change hearts and minds everywhere.”

ABOUT US

Gail Willumsen and Jill Shinefield first worked together a few decades ago at the Los Angeles offices of National Geographic Television. Different interests had led them there – Jill’s obsession with nature films and Jane Goodall; Gail’s fascination with archaeology and prehistory. Working at Nat Geo was a dream come true for Gail and Jill because they embraced the Society’s mission:  to support exploration and inspire people to care about the world.  They also wanted to travel the world – and they did, producing shows on wildlife in the Holy Land, Kodiak bears, mummies and volcanoes. After a few years they decided to start their own production company, Gemini Productions and went on to earn a Peabody, three Emmy awards, and many other accolades.

In some sense, all of Gemini’s films celebrate individuals who are trying to make the world a better place. Gail and Jill have filmed wildlife conservationists (including Jane Goodall and Jacques Cousteau), medical researchers and astrophysicists (including several Nobel laureates), as well as community health workers, educators and transgender rights activists. Gemini Productions champions the heroes who further our knowledge and understanding, and make us smarter and more compassionate to each other.
